The Internet highway is revolutionizing the way we gather information, shop, and do business. Millions of web users are on the Internet 24/7 and the Federal Trade Commission is encouraging people to do all they can to protect their personal information. Here are the FTC’s top 10 ways to protect your personal information while on the Internet. Follow their advice and it’s a good bet you won’t become a victim of fraud or identity theft:
1. Install a firewall to protect your information. Install current and up-to-date anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, and firewall programs to protect against identity thieves.
2. Install reputable programs, including anti-spam and anti-virus software.
3. Use caution when dealing with pop-ups. This is where viruses are often planted.
4. Do not publish your I.P. address on websites or newsgroups, unless you’re sure that you are fully protected.
5. Backup your computer system.
6. Turn off your Internet connection when not in use. If you are not connected to the computer, you cannot be infected, hacked, or hijacked.
7. Be very cautious about attachments. When in doubt, assume the unknown attachment is a virus.
8. Verify both the source and content of each file you download.
9. Avoid storing personal information on your computer. Transfer it to a disc and use the disc when you need the information.
10. Keep your anti-virus, firewall and operating systems updated.
The Internet can be a safe place to surf, as long as you protect yourself adequately from unwanted intruders.
